What is FSC Certification?
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is a non-governmental organization with over 600 members in more than 70 countries, representing social groups, environmental organizations, foresters, forestry enterprises, indigenous peoples’ organizations and researchers, among others, committed to responsible forest management. The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body; it is made up of three Chambers (Environmental, Social and Economic). Each chamber has two subchambers (northern and southern countries).
This structure guarantees that the interests of the different sectors and of countries with different economic development are balanced, and the independence and transparency of decision making. The FSC has an international office in Bonn,Germany, four regional offices (Europe, America, Africa and Oceania-Southeast Asia) and a network of National Initiatives in 34 countries.
Through the accredited bodies, FSC grants Certificates to the forestry companies that comply with its principles and criteria. FSC certification is based on management that is socially and environmentally responsible and produces economic results which make the project sustainable.
The types of certificates are: Forestry Management (FM/CoC) when the company manages plantations or forests, and Chain of Custody (CoC) for those companies which are part of the industrial and commercial process involving wood and non-wood products generated in forests and plantations.
